STRAY THOUGHTS Topic: Love Who?

"If you can't be with the one you love
Love the one you're with"
Stephen Stills;
Love The One You're With
Sometimes I wonder what exactly Stills meant by those lyrics.
Is it, as some of my more puritanical friends have insisted, a wonton celebration of casual sex?
Or is it, as I, through the lens of my multiple neuroses, see it, an invitation to settle for less?
So, what do you think?

An interesting question, Ray. I'm glad you asked. Really, I don't think it's either an invitation to casual sex OR settling for less. It's a song about patience. You see, sometimes you just can't be with the one you love. In that case, you cannot shut out the world and drown in sorrw, nor turn a blind eye to those around you. You can't sit and mope, so take pleasure in those around you and excersize a little patience. The one you love will come back, but in the meantime, enjoy some other company.

Unless you're alone in your house and in that case this is a song about masturbation.
